TED Talk inspires next generation of Barristers

Raynes Park High School had a Presidential visit on 21 April, when Siobhan McGrath, a barrister and President of the First-tier Tribunal Property Chamber, spoke to the Sixth Form. Siobhan is one of Britain’s leading housing lawyers and also sits as a part-time Recorder (judge). Her job as President is to lead the 300 tribunal members, who decide individual cases.

Siobhan came to RPHS at the invitation of Michael Ross, Chair of Governors, a former colleague. She told the Sixth Form of the interesting and valuable work that a career in law can offer. Her tribunal, which settles disputes in the housing sector, handles 11,000 cases a year.

Siobhan said:

“There are few subjects that get people more worked up than having a roof over their heads. The law is complex, but the tribunal’s job is to be user-friendly, and to settle disputes quickly and cheaply.

“The law does not have to be as dry as dust. It’s always about real issues and real people, and that’s what makes it such a great career.”
