The Careers Department at Raynes Park High School is committed to promoting a career development culture by providing access to careers information, advice and guidance to students and careers education to help them build the skills they will need for working life.

Careers Education

Careers Education is delivered to all year groups through Personal, Social and Health Education lessons, assemblies, drop down days and relevant subject areas and is based on the Career Development Institute’s Framework for careers, employability and enterprise education:

Careers Information, Advice and Guidance

Information, advice and guidance is available to all students, to enable them to make decisions about their education and careers choices. An overview of the provision we offer is outlined below:

Face-to-face guidance interviews

All students in Year 10 will receive a careers guidance interview with the independent careers adviser who is in school once a week. Following the interview a written action plan will be produced and shared with the student, their parents and their tutor. Parents are encouraged to take note of the action points so that they can support their child in reaching their goals.

Appointments with the independent careers adviser are also available at Year 8-13 parent evenings.

Ms Brake, the Careers Coordinator, is also fully-qualified to give careers guidance and is available for drop-in guidance on Monday and Wednesday lunchtimes. This is open to all year groups but priority will be given to Year 11. In addition, students in Year 13 can self-refer to Ms Brake for guidance appointments.

Careers Resources

In Year 8, students will be given access to Fast Tomato www.fasttomato.com which has a profiling tool that suggests suitable occupations. Students can also use this website to find up to date information about any occupation of interest and the different routes into it, including which subjects might be essential to study. Students in all year groups are encouraged to review their Fast Tomato profile regularly as their interests change.

Opportunities such as open days and apprenticeship vacancies are shared to students via their tutors and the careers noticeboards. We also have a full range of careers resources in our school library and sixth form.

Employer and alumni speakers

Throughout the year we invite visitors from the world of work to speak in assemblies, lessons or drop down days to give students an insight into the opportunities available in the current labour market.

Careers Fair

In July, we host our annual careers and opportunities fair which is aimed at Year 10 but sixth formers are also welcome to attend. Approximately, 40 representatives from employment or further study are involved and students have the opportunity to ask questions about careers or pathways they are interested in. We ensure that all pathways are covered so that students can find out about apprenticeships, employment, gap years and graduate schemes plus further and higher education.

Work Experience

All students in Year 10 complete one week of work experience, to develop a greater understanding of the world of work and identify the links between the skills used and developed in school, and those necessary in the workplace. Following the week’s placement, students are given opportunities to reflect and evaluate their own experience and development.
