Houses of Parliament Visit

On Monday 10th February Raynes Park High School politics students descended on the Houses of Parliament for an exciting day of active learning in the halls of Westminster.  The visit was organised by all our politics students, who took up my challenge to tweet the local Member of Parliament, Siobhain McDonagh (MP for Mitcham and Morden), and lobby her for a visit.

Students did not expect a response and they were pleased and excited when Siobhain replied to their request and invited them to visit parliament.  We travelled by train from Raynes Park station to Waterloo station, from where we walked to Parliament. We were met by Siobhain McDonagh who generously gave us three hours of her time and took us on a historic tour of both Houses of Parliament. She was able to provide students with information about the history of parliament and walked us through both chambers. Students asked questions about the role of MPs and the relationship between the government and monarchy.

It was a fantastic day of learning and helped all students to fully appreciate the workings of parliament.  Since the visit Siobhain has kept in touch with students via twitter and anyone interested can follow RPHS politics students on their very own twitter account @RPHShistorygp for more pictures and tweets about the visit.
