What is Criminology about?

If you are fascinated with watching crime documentaries and attempting to explain criminal behaviour then you will find Criminology very interesting! Criminology is the study of crime and criminal behaviour. Students will learn about different types of crime and how perceptions of crime may differ. You will also gain an understanding of why people commit crime and how the criminal justice system works. This is a fascinating and engaging subject to study that applies theory to reality through a study real life examples of high profile crimes, learning about the media campaigns that arise from them, which aim to change the law.

What will I study?

In year 1, Students will study the psychological and sociological theories of crime as well as how crime is perceived in society and the impact of the media and crime statistics.

In year 2, students will investigate the different techniques used in a criminal investigation such as forensics, policing and the judiciary process. Students will also consider the effectiveness of different strategies used to reduce criminality from custodial sentences and the impact of community orders.

How is the course assessed?

Assessment is combination of examination and controlled assessments completed throughout the course.
