What is Mathematics?

Mathematics is the study of numbers, shapes and patterns. It deals with the logic of linking these three elements in order to develop the technology of our world. It enables you to explain, based on modelling, the behaviour of various concepts such as economics, living organsims and improve structures through engineering.

What will I study?

The course is made up of a Pure and an Applied component. The pure component covers: Quadratic Functions, Coordinate Geometry, Sequences & Series, Trigonometry, Exponentials & Logarithms, Differentiation, Integration, Vectors and Numerical Methods. The Applied component comprises of Statistics and deals with Sampling, Data Presentation and Interpretation, Probability, Statistical Distributions, Statistical Hypothesis Testing and Mechanics which includes Kinematics, Forces and Newton’s Laws, Moments. Modelling is an integral part of the course where real life situations are analysed based on fundamental mathematical principles.

After completing the course, as well as an in-depth understanding of number theory, you will also have many transferable skills including problem solving, organisation and pattern analysis which are important for University studies or Employment.

How will I be assessed?

External assessments take place at the end of Year 13 and are 3 x 2 hour exams

Who should study A Level Mathematics?

Mathematics is an excellent A Level choice for ambitious students who have a flair for numbers, enjoy problem solving and critical thinking. It is an amazing subject for students who want to develop a resilient nature for solve challenging problems.
